VENTS MAGAZINE:
Hi Jenn, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hello! I’m great thanks! How are you? Thank you very much for having me. I’m a big fan of your blog.
Can you talk to us more about your song, Like I Did.
Like I Did is my most recent release. It’s an uptempo pop/r&b, energetic song. Lyrically, the song is about breaking free from a toxic relationship even if your partner doesn’t want to let go. Sometimes, even though you love the person that you’re with, there comes a time where you have to put yourself first and realize that your partner just isn’t the right one for you. You have to believe that true love still awaits. Like I Did celebrates the freedom that comes with breaking free and the development of a new, better, healthier relationship.
Did any event inspire you to write this song?
Actually, yes. A number of songs that I write are based off a personal experience that I have had. I love taking the feelings and emotions that I have experienced and turning them into a song. At the time I was writing Like I Did with Shobha, I had just gotten out of a trying relationship with an ex-boyfriend of mine. I really liked him at the time but I eventually came to the realization that he just wasn’t the right one for me. Even though he didn’t want to let go, I ended up breaking up with him because I just wasn’t very happy. Like I Did describes the struggle and freedom that comes from moving on from a difficult relationship.
Any plans to release a video for the track?
I plan on releasing a lyric video for Like I Did sometime next week. I also plan on filming a music video on my own for the song, which I will release in the coming weeks. I’m really excited about both of these projects!
How was the recording and writing process?
The recording and writing process was an amazing experience. Rob, Shobha, and I worked so well together, we had a really fun time. When we decided to work together, I already had the concept and a number of the lyrics written. I also had a few melody ideas in mind. I explained to Rob the kind of sound that I was going for and he ended up creating an incredible track for the song. While he worked on the track, Shobha and I bounced ideas back and forth. Shobha is incredibly talented, and an amazing songwriter. We were really happy with how the song turned out.
What was it like to work with Rob Wells and how did that relationship develop?
Working with Rob was an incredible experience. He is so talented and it’s easy to see why he’s regarded as one of the best producers in the business. He knows what’s
current and we were always on the same page when creating the track for Like I Did. We had a similar vision for the song which made working together easy and fun.
I met Rob Wells online through Twitter. I wanted to go back into the studio and bring this concept that I had to life. I had already heard some of his work in songs by Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Tyler Shaw, and other successful artists. I was a big fan of his work and thought I would reach out and see if he would be interested in collaborating with me. He heard my previous releases online and we immediately booked the studio and started working on Like I Did.
How much did he influence the song?
Rob’s production really gave the song the feel I was looking for. He’s very easy to work with. He knows that at the end of the day that this is our song, which as an independent artist I just love. I truly felt that this was a collaborative effort. We’re already working on a new song.
This song has this great Daft Punk late-sound – do they play a role in your music?
I think Daft Punk are extremely talented. I’m definitely a fan of their music. Their sound is always so current and their songs are really catchy and I love that. They don’t play a huge role in the music that I write but I’m definitely a fan. I had Get Lucky on repeat in my car for months when it came out haha! They’re great.
What role does Toronto play in your writing?
Toronto is my favourite city in the world. I love the rush and the overall energy and vibe of the city. It’s always so full of excitement and that’s exactly what I want my songs to be – exciting and energetic. I actually write most of my songs at various studios right downtown. It’s the perfect place to write, especially when you’re aiming for something uptempo, fun, and vibrant.
How’s your new EP coming along?
My new EP is coming along great! It will be available on iTunes, Spotify, and other major music platforms in the spring. It will include Like I Did and my previous releases. I usually release every song as a single first, then have them available online as an EP.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The title of the EP is called Come Alive, which is a lyric from my song, Back To Life. Regarding the release date, I haven’t set an official one yet, but Come Alive will be available on major music platforms likely in May.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m hoping to do a series of performances in and around the Greater Toronto Area this summer. I’m really excited! Information regarding the shows will be posted on my website, www.jennconnormusic.com. You can also follow me @JennConnorMusic on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
What else is happening next in Jenn Connor’s world?
I have a lot planned for 2018. Right now, I’m still focused on the release and promotion of Like I Did. I plan on visiting radio stations and doing a few performances to help promote the song. I’ll then be going back into the studio to record two more songs that I have been working on. I’m hoping to release one of the songs in the summer and then the other in the fall. I’m really excited about this year. I have a lot going on and it’s definitely going to be my most exciting year yet!
